State of the Art of Mobile Robotics in Portugal

Abstract

With the development of navigation systems for autonomous vehicles and the improvement of computers performance, the first industrial mobile robots appeared. However, their current application scope is broader. A mobile robot conjugates in a single automatic device the mobility of an autonomous vehicle and manipulation skills of a conventional robot. In this domain, the AGV (Automatic Guided Vehicle) and the AS/RS (Automatic Storage / Retrieval System) are the most important devices for manufacturing and distribution enterprises. In Portugal, the enterprise Efacec Robotics and Automation is a pioneer in the mobile robots domain. This paper characterizes the mobile robots already designed and installed with Portuguese know-how, making the state of the art in Portugal in this domain. The analysis is focused in AGV and AS/RS projects, making a classification of these systems and pointing-out the most relevant design, implementation and control aspects. Some statistical data about those projects is presented, classifying them through localization, type of system, dimension, application area and technological resources. At the end of the paper, some conclusions and future evolution perspectives about the mobile robots domain are presented.
